Interabang Books Presents Maya Golden Bethany and The Senator
Join author Maya Golden Bethany in conversation with Emmy-award winning journalist Tashara Parker for the release day celebration and discussion of Maya's latest book THE SENATOR.
For fans of Louise Penny, a riveting political thriller set in today's Washington D.C., exploring the high stakes of power and corruption.
US Senator Oliver Michaels of Maine campaigned on the hopes of changing Washington. One year after becoming the youngest senator in Congress, Oliver finds himself disheartened by systemic bureaucracy, partisan finger-pointing, the power of lobbyists, and the collapse of his marriage.
When New York Times reporter Alex Broussard shows up at his office, Oliver is presented with a shocking corruption scheme involving two congressmen, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, and a chemical manufacturer.
With this real opportunity to clean up dirty DC politics, Alex reignites Oliver’s pledge to help people lost in messy legislative battles and abandoned by government in sacrifice zones. Yet, lofty political aspirations aren’t the only things burning with passion. Working side by side, Alex and Oliver, once an item in college, realize feelings still linger for one another.
Alex and Oliver’s efforts to expose the unlawful plot also uncovers the fact that they are pawns in a rigged game hosted by those who will do anything to keep their positions of power and their wallets padded - even kill. The stakes continuously rise, putting Alex, Oliver, and their family and friends in grave danger. Each must decide what’s more important; the safety of their loved ones or the health of the public.

Hughes Postdoctoral Lecture Presented by Dr. Will Roudabush’s with a Response from J.K. Barrett
SMU Department of English is pleased to present the Hughes Postdoctoral Lecture by Dr. Will Roudabush. In his lecture titled "Shakespeare’s Perspectival Poetry," Dr. Roudabush will examine how the invention of visual perspective painting changed how the Renaissance, and Shakespeare in particular, understood the nature of poetic invention itself. Focusing on Sonnet 24 and Cymbeline, it will show how Shakespeare reimagined invention not as a fixed point within his poems and plays for readers and audiences to discover, but as a collaboration between his preconceived meaning and their embodied reception of it. J.K. Barret, Associate Professor of English and Director of the Program of in British, Irish, and Empire Studies (BIES) at the University of Texas at Austin, will respond to Dr. Roudabush’s talk, and a Q&A will follow.

Evan Smoak is a highly trained former government assassin who has survived for years by keeping his circle to a few trusted confidants and a strict code he calls “The Ten Commandments.” But when Evan suddenly finds himself at odds with his oldest friend, all the rules he lives by shatter—and the consequences are murderous.
Tommy Stojack might be Evan's best friend in the world. He’s a gifted gunsmith who has created much of Evan's own weapons and combat gear. But now, he has apparently crossed one of Evan's hardest lines and their argument explodes into open warfare. Now Evan has no choice but to track and face down his only friend.
In the meantime, Tommy has left town in order to honor his own promise to help a dead friend's son. While Tommy is fighting to save the son with everything he’s got, Evan arrives with vengeance in mind.
But as deadly as the former Orphan X is, there is an even more dangerous threat about to arrive on the scene. The only question left is will any of them get out alive.

A Conversation with Alan Nadel
The SMU Department of English and its Narrative Now Initiative are excited to announce an upcoming visit from Alan Nadel. Dr. Nadel is the William T. Bryan Chair in American Literature and Culture at the University of Kentucky and has published a variety of works, including books, essays, and poetry.
His free talk is titled "Mission Unaccomplished: American Cultural Narratives and Iraq War Films."
Event Schedule, February 12, 2025 -- Fondren Library's Texana Room
Reception: 5:00 p.m.
Conversation and Q&A: 6:00 p.m.
Alan Nadel, William T. Bryan Chair in American Literature and Culture at the University of Kentucky, has authored, most recently, Demographic Angst: American Film and Cultural Narratives of the 1950s (2018) and The Theater of August Wilson (2018). His other books include Invisible Criticism: Ralph Ellison and the American Canon (1988), Containment Culture (1995), Flatlining on the Field of Dreams: Cultural Narratives in the Films of President Reagan’s America (1997), and Television in Black-and-White America (2005). In addition, he has edited collections of essays on August Wilson and co-edited Henry James and Alfred Hitchcock: The Men Who Knew Too Much (2011), and Dramatic Apparitions and Theatrical Ghosts (2023). He has won prizes for the best essay in Modern Fiction Studies and the best essay in PMLA. He is former President of the International Society for the Study of Narrative and served on the society’s Executive Committee for 30 years. His poetry has appeared in several journals, including Georgia Review, New England Review, Partisan Review, Paris Review, Sewanee Review, and Shenandoah. He has also won the 2019 Sewanee Review Poetry Prize. His latest book, Mission Unaccomplished: American War Films in the Twenty-First Century, will be published by University of Texas Press in October 2025.
Traditionally, American cultural has iterated the narrative that peace is normal and war aberrant. War’s ultimate mission, therefore, is to restore peace. That cultural narrative informs traditional combat films, such that rationale for any specific mission is the adversary’s surrender, without which a formal Occupation, which transitions to peacetime, is impossible. Declaring the Iraq War “Mission Accomplished” without a surrender left American troops fighting a war without a mission, thereby turning the Occupation into an occupation, In The Hurt Locker, therefore, military service becomes a daily job bereft of its narrative arc, a point underscored by the fact that the episodes depicting discrete workdays could be arranged in almost any order. This talk will take an extended look at The Hurt Locker as exemplary of the post-Mission Accomplished war films and their informing cultural narrative.
Narrative Now invites all members of the SMU community, as well as the general public, to join in this unique opportunity to hear from this distinguished speaker. The event is free, but space is limited. Early arrival is recommended.
