SMU Department of English is pleased to present the Hughes Postdoctoral Lecture by Dr. Will Roudabush. In his lecture titled "Shakespeare’s Perspectival Poetry," Dr. Roudabush will examine how the invention of visual perspective painting changed how the Renaissance, and Shakespeare in particular, understood the nature of poetic invention itself. Focusing on Sonnet 24 and Cymbeline, it will show how Shakespeare reimagined invention not as a fixed point within his poems and plays for readers and audiences to discover, but as a collaboration between his preconceived meaning and their embodied reception of it. J.K. Barret, Associate Professor of English and Director of the Program of in British, Irish, and Empire Studies (BIES) at the University of Texas at Austin, will respond to Dr. Roudabush’s talk, and a Q&A will follow.
